ABSTRACT: Objective: Identify the main factors related to stress among dental students. Methods: Electronic databases were: Electronics Brazilian Base Virtual Health Library (VHL) and PubMed International Data Base (US National Library of Medicine - NLM), using the keywords "psychological stress", "dental students." We selected articles in Portuguese, English or Spanish, in the period from January 2005 to November 2014. The search initially identified 190 studies, of which 19 were included in the final analysis. Results: Among the factors related to stress, most research (57.9%) reported examination processes and the academic overload as variables most frequently cited by students as important sources of stress. Conclusions: Understanding factors that can interfere with students' well-being is an information base for future studies, in order to reduce the occurrence of the phenomenon, especially at the national level, where research is scarce.
