Health education strategies regarding zoonoses through the Veterinary Public Health Academic League

Abstract

This study aims to report on the health education activities focused on the prevention of zoonotic diseases promoted by the Academic League of Veterinary Public Health (LASPVET) of the State University of Bahia (UNEB), highlighting the importance of teaching veterinary public health and the role of the veterinarian as a promoter of One Health, especially in the control of zoonotic diseases. A retrospective study, with a qualitative and descriptive approach, was conducted to evaluate the strategies for promoting health education on zoonoses carried out by LASPVET between March and December 2024. The activities included professional development sessions for league members; lectures open to the community; dissemination of content on zoonoses on Instagram®; partnership with the Zoonosis Control Center; participation in anti-rabies vaccination campaigns; and the creation of informative graphic materials. The extension activities carried out reinforce the role of the veterinarian in promoting One Health and controlling zoonoses, in addition to involving the community in educational and preventive actions. These strategies proved effective in raising awareness and engaging the community, promoting understanding of the importance of One Health. Therefore, the study highlighted the relevance of integrating teaching, research, and outreach in building practices that benefit both human and animal health, emphasizing the role of LASPVET in training students and disseminating knowledge to society through health education.
