Abstract

In this article, focusing on bilingualism, we will investigate cognitive aspects of bilingual children and the implications that the second language can have on their academic and social lives. Supported by General Linguistics Studies by Saussure, Children's Cognitive Development by Piaget, Chomsky's Universal Grammar, and Vygotsky's sociocultural exposition, we discuss how bilingual children develop enhanced attention, as well as address the issue of children on the Autism Spectrum, who, despite never having had previous exposure to a second language, are capable of speaking both languages fluently. The article is based on the observation of Haitian children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with or without speech and language difficulties, from a municipal school in a city in the interior of Santa Catarina, and how pedagogical practices and social experiences within the school context benefited their development, making them bilingual
