The objective of this article was to conduct a comparative based on case studies regarding the use of free software versus Microsoft Project in project management, from an educational tool perspective. The methodological development was carried out in three stages: In the first stage, the main international methodologies and some general terms involved in project management were outlined, which led to the second stage; in this stage, a systematic literature review was used to conduct the state-of-the-art study. Only English articles from journals published between the dates: 2013-08-23 and 2023-08-24, and indexed in the Web of Science database were selected. From a total of 635 articles and after a detailed review, a final base of 49 articles was obtained for analysis. In the third stage, a comparison was made based on case studies and by consulting the related literature on the use of free software in the area of project management, which offers functionalities equivalent to Microsoft Project. In conclusion: This state-of-the-art review contributes to the literature on project management, helping to consolidate the academic field, complementing the results of previous theoretical-conceptual studies; it also discussed the advantages brought in the learning processes and knowledge management in universities and higher education institutions, to identify key topics and advance new subfields.
